DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.

During the week of Jan. 1-8, Big Island police arrested 31 motorists for drunken driving. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 12; Kona, 9; Puna, 8; Ka’u and South Kohala, 1 each.

So far this year, there have been 31 DUI arrests compared with 22 during the same period last year, an increase of 40.9 percent.

There have been 19 major accidents so far this year compared with 32 during the same period last year, a decrease of 40.6 percent.

So far this year, there have been no traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with two during the same period last year, a decrease of 100 percent.
